Canada Immigration: Dos and Don’ts

Thousands of people move to Canada for work, study or other reasons every year. This is because the culturally diverse country has so much to offer.
Immigrants must maximize the immigration process so that they can overcome challenges before and after their arrival. Individuals that take this step tend to have a fulfilled stay in Canada and are open to exciting experiences.
Here are some of the dos and donts of the Canada immigration process.
Dos
- Do your due diligence
Canada is a vast country with countless opportunities. Failing to conduct adequate research may make you encounter different issues as soon as you arrive in Canada. Try to find out how housing, transportation, employment among other things work.
Another thing is to get to know the climate in your preferred province as some areas in Canada are extremely cold.
- Define your support network
The immigration process can be a roller coaster emotional journey. Nevertheless, it’s possible to have a smooth transition with the right support system. Your loved ones and acquaintances can provide immense support as you process your immigration and settle in your province.
In case you don’t have any family members or friends in Canada, immigration consultants can connect you with support groups online. Alternatively, try to find them yourself.
- Master the language
Canada has two official languages namely, English Language and French. It’s better to speak any of the languages fluently before you arrive in the country. Failure to do this can lead to a language barrier when communicating with locals or colleagues.
- Confirm your eligibility
Each program or occupation in Canada has its own set of requirements. These requirements are subject to change without any prior warning. Make sure that you’re eligible for the program you want to apply for early on.
There is no short cut when processing a Canadian immigration visa – an application will be rejected once a candidate fails to meet the requirements.
- Present your credentials at the point of entry
The Canadian authority prioritizes safety and sees anything that can jeopardize this as a threat. You won’t be allowed into the country unless you provide credentials that are in line with the government criteria at the border. Taking this step will make your entry hassle-free.
Don’ts
- Expect a fast immigration process
The processing time for each immigration program varies. There is a special entry program for international students and skilled foreign workers. The Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is concerned with processing applications within six months.
Such applications should be under the express entry program. In case you’re planning to try other programs, the type of application you opt for and your location will determine how the length of the process. The time can around a month to a year.
- Forget the necessary documents
Although Canada is a land of opportunity for several workers, it can be daunting to secure a good job. You will need to prepare all the required documents when applying for a work permit. Forgetting any of them can lead to a delayed application.
- Travel with inadequate resources
Newcomers must travel to Canada with adequate resources. Make sure you have sufficient financial resources that will last you for some weeks or months in case you can’t get accommodation or a job immediately.
- Commit citizenship fraud
The Canadian government doesn’t take citizenship fraud lightly with the approval of the Reforms of the Citizenship Act. Permanent residents or citizens who are found guilty will pay a fine of 1 lakh Dollar and spend five years in prison.
Engaging in citizenship fraud has made some individuals lose their citizenship and be expelled from Canada.
